Sing a Song!

Someone said, 'Music soothes the savage soul' - or something to that effect. Don't quote me. It's the idea that counts here.

Anyway, it's true for me. Just a little music and I'm good to go. It helps a lot. Is that true for you?

Ephesians 5:19-20 says,

Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

I think music is one God's great gifts. I think he sang creation into being (Tolkien inspired this thought, thank you, J.R.R.). I think when we are most at peace, or shalom, our senses filled to overflowing with all that he has graciously and abundantly provided (his banquet - see yesterday's comments), we naturally burst into song. All nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres. The song is directed toward the Creator and I want to join the choir!

What about you?

Its on car rides where as I stare out of my window that a song comes to my mind and meshes with the visuals I see. Kinda like the inspirations of a music video (Christian songs). A song will come on Air1 and for some reason , what I see outside may move me strongly. More so then just the song its self. This may be why more churches are offering multi sensory worship services.

At an retreat, the guest speaker told us that we each had a song that identified us; sort of our theme song. Mine is "Great is Thy Faithfulness." He asked us to share them with one another. It was very interesting - I learned a lot about others at the retreat. What is your theme song?

The song that comes to mind for me is "Make My Life a Prayer to You" by Keith Green,

Make my life a prayer to You
I want to do what You want me to
No empty words, no white lies
No token prayers, no compromise

I want to shine the light You gave
Through Your Son You sent to save us
From ourselves and our despair
It comforts me to konw You're really there

Well, I want to thank You now for being patient with me
Oh, it's so hard to see when my eyes are on me
I guess I'll have to trust and just believe what You say
Oh, You're coming again, coming to take me away

I want to die and let You give Your life to me that I might live
And share the hope You gave the me
The love that set me free
I want to tell the world out there
You're not something or fairy tale
That I've made up inside my head
You're God the Son, You've risen from the dead

I want to die and let You give Your life to me that I might live
And share the hope You gave to me
I want to share the love that set me free

Music can certainly sooth the savage beast. So often when I hear a good piece of music, my mind calms down and I get transported to a different place. Music is something that connects with people on a level different then visual stimulus or purely spoken input. When ever I hear Fanfare of Praise, which is based on the tune for Fairest Lord Jesus, I just get drawn into the majesty of the fanfare with the purposed strength of the theme:

1.
Fairest Lord Jesus,
Lord of all nature,
O thou of God and man the Son;
Thee will I cherish,
Thee will I honor,
Thou my soul's glory, joy and crown.

2.
Fair are the meadows,
Fairer the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer,
Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

3.
Fair is the sunshine,
Fairer the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels Heaven can boast.

4.
Beautiful Saviour,
Lord of the nations,
Son of God and Son of man,
Glory and honor,
Praise, adoration,
Now and for evermore be thine.

I find that songs I have memorized throught he years...many in my native language Swedish...tend to come back and speak truths to me...Also, music itself without words tend to communicate to my soul about the greatness of the Creator...I believe we are created for wholeness in body, mind, soul an spirit and music to me is an extension of insight in the mystery of wholeness/holiness....

I am blesed by your comments. Multi-sensory, yes, Erin, but I also agree with 'Strange Man' that music hits us on its own level. That's the beauty - it can work together with the visuals, etc., or bless by itself.

My favorite song of favorites is 'In the secret of thy presence'

In the secret of thy presence,
Where the pure in heart may dwell,
Are the springs of sacred service And a power that none can tell.
There my love must bring its offering,
There my heart must yield its praise,
And the Lord will come, revealing All the secrets of his ways.
Chorus:
In the secret of thy presence,
In the hiding of thy power,
Let me love thee,
Let me serve thee,
Every consecrated hour.

More than all my lips may utter,
More than all I do or bring,
Is the depth of my devotion
To my Savior, Lord & King.
Nothing less will keep me tender,
Nothing less will keep me true,
Nothing less will keep the fragrance
And the bloom on all I do.
Chorus
Blessed Lord, to see thee truly,
Then to tell as I have seen,
This shall rule my life supremely,
This shall be the sacred gleam.
Sealed again is all the sealing,
Pledged again my willing heart,
First to know thee, then to serve thee,
Then to see thee as thou art.

Beautiful song, JMB. I like it, too. I also love 'Fairest Lord Jesus' - what a picture and celebration of Christ!

I think these songs will sing in my heart all day, now. Thanks.

I am reminded of the song by Steve Green, Oh I want to know you more.

Oh I want to know you more deep within my soul I want to know you, oh I want to know you more.

Everytime I here this song it helps me to realize how much I need the Lord in my life and how much my life is nothing without God. God is all I want and all I need.
